On February 21, 2107, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) held a press conference at the District Three, Ohio Nurses Association (ONA) office where he outlined new legislation to address the practice of “surprise billing,” when patients are faced with costly medical bills after unintentionally receiving care from an out-of-network provider.
The End Surprise Billing Act would protect patients experiencing a medical emergency from being charged more than in-network rates for emergency care and provide patients scheduling services with more information about potential out-of-pocket costs.
On hand to support the Senator and the legislative initiative were Amber Jamison, an ONA Member from Cleveland, who shared a personal account of the devastation “surprise billing” can cause and District Three, ONA members, Carol Smith, President, Jeannie Mulichak, 1st VP, Janet Reeves, Board Member and Linda Warino, Executive Director.
