One of the Valley’s centers for helping troubled teens, DAYBREAK, celebrated a milestone birthday January 19, 2017. The Daybreak Youth Crisis Center invited the community of past clients, stakeholders, community leaders, supporters and staff to a reception with the purpose of celebrating the center’s 40th birthday.

The Daybreak Youth Crisis Center is a community-based, 10 bed shelter providing emergency shelter and crisis counseling services 24/7 and 365 days a year to abused, neglected, run away and home-less youth from 11 to 18 years of age. Daybreak opened its doors in 1976 and since that time over 8,000 young people from the tri-county area passed through those doors finding shelter from the streets. It is the only program of its kind in the Valley and one of only 11 shelters for homeless youth in the State of Ohio.

District Three, ONA got involved in this endeavor as a community service project in 1986 (31 years ago) with Nancy Mosca, PhD, RN, PNP-BC, PHCNS-BC, NCSN as the inaugural chair.

The 40th birthday celebration included a keynote by the Honorable Judge Theresa Dellick and special recognition to District Three, ONA and our president, Carol E. Smith, MSN, RN (see photos of her with Judge Dellick, S.R. Mi- chelle Lepore-Hagan et al at the event) for years of service and support to Daybreak.

Ms. Smith is the present and longtime chairperson of the District’s
Daybreak outreach program whereby volunteer RNs use their nursing assessment skills in order to help refer troubled adolescents to the proper healthcare services needed. If a nurse agrees, she/he is asked to schedule a few hours of time each month to offer service to this worthy endeavor.

If you are an RN who wants to help, call the District office and volunteer today. This is a great effort and you will be very glad that you did.
